Discontinuation of ReCon Diesel Particulate Filter

Cummins has made the decision to discontinue the production of ReCon DPFs. Customers will still be able to purchase ReCon DPFs until January 2, 2021 or until ReCon inventory runs out. While ReCon DPFs are being phased out, we emphasize that NEW DPFs can continue to be purchased for applicable engine models.

There are a few key factors that led to the decision to phase out ReCon DPFs. Due to improved technology and durability of the DPF, there is a continued demand reduction in major markets which has led our manufacturing facility in Houston, Texas to experience a softening in product orders over the last several years. Because of the improved technology and durability of the product, we are also seeing a lower core return for many of the ReCon DPF applications, resulting in a lower quantity of pieces which can be successfully remanufactured. Of the core that is still being returned, we are seeing a deteriorating quality that is not conducive for remanufacturing. These reasons, in conjunction with the evolution of the DPF product and the business needing to have a flexible manufacturing model to increase efficiencies, have led to this decision.

Due to the changes in product offering, we have strategically adjusted our pricing for NEW DPFs in 2021 to remain competitive in the market. Our genuine new DPFs provide customers with optimal performance while reducing equipment downtime and labor costs.

When speaking with your customers please inform them, as you see fit, of the change in product strategy and the value of using Genuine Cummins DPFs.

ReCon DPF Announcement FAQ

1. Why is Cummins going to stop offering ReCon DPFs?

Due to improved technology and durability of the DPF, there is a continued demand reduction in major markets. Lesser number of cores are being returned from the market. The quality of the core returned is deteriorating and is not conducive for remanufacturing. Evolution of the DPF product and the business needing to have a flexible manufacturing model to increase efficiencies has also led to this decision.

2. How long will you continue to sell the RX product?

RX product will be available until January 2, 2021 or until the inventory is depleted, whichever comes last.

3. How will we know when to start ordering the new part number and not the RX?

The Sales Status Code (SSC) will guide what part needs to be purchased. Once the ReCon DPF is no longer available, you will be guided to the new part when the order is placed.

4. Why are we waiting until 2021 to make these changes?

This is to ensure maximum ReCon inventory is used up before switching over to the only New DPF offering. This also aligns with the annual pricing action and allows for a smoother transition to the price strategy for new DPFs.

5. Is there a way to properly/responsibly dispose of DPF/DPF core?

DPF core can be sent to RLCC for proper disposal. Core return for parts sold as RX will be accepted up to 12 months after the part is shipped to the distributor/OEM for the core bill. Cores received outside this timeline will be for disposal only and no core credit will be issued by RLCC. Please update your systems accordingly.

6. Once my core bills are settled, what do I do with the DPF core?

After the core bills are settled, you can still send the core to RLCC for disposal. DPF core can also be locally recycled or scrapped.

7. Can I still return my core?

Core return for parts sold as RX will be accepted for core credit until 12 months after the part is shipped to the distributor/OEM. After the core bills are settled, you can still send the core to RLCC for disposal. DPF core can also be locally recycled or scrapped.

8. How will we deal with inventory in the DBU and dealer branches?

The RX part numbers will be sellable until the inventory is depleted. Core return for parts sold as RX will be accepted up to 12 months after sale. Cores outside this timeline can still be sent to RLCC for disposal only.

9. How will parts warranty be affected?

Warranty terms and conditions will not change. If an RX DPF experiences a warrantable failure after the RX DPF part has been superseded, the warranty event will be handled with the equivalent New DPF.

10. What is Cummins position on cleaning DPFs?

Cummins recommends replacing the DPF with a New Cummins Genuine DPF during the service event to maximize performance and uptime. Cummins does not recommend using unauthorized cleaning methods or air cleaning machines for cleaning DPFs.
