Cummins Update Manager and Windows 7 Support
Guidance for User Scenarios - Call to Action- Before December 20, 2020

This update communicates two critical and recommended actions for Cummins INSITETM and LCT users. Guidance to user specific scenarios is explained in attached material.

Communicate the need for INSITE and License Configuration Tool (LCT) users to upgrade to latest operating system from Microsoft as soon as possible

Reason:
Microsoft has officially ended support for their Windows 7 Operating System starting January 14, 2020. Cummins applications (INSITE, LCT) have a technical reliance on Microsoft and other third-party components which are in the process to be discontinued or have already discontinued their support with Windows 7 compatibility. Hence, Cummins technical support will have limited or no ability to support application related issues on a Windows 7 PC.

Impact:
If there is no action and if there are issues experienced with INSITE and/or LCT on PCs using Windows 7 OS, Cummins team will have limited ability to support with a resolution.

Recommended Action:
Upgrade to latest Microsoft OS version as soon as possible.

Communicate the need for INSITE and License Configuration Tool (LCT) users to update to Cummins Inc. Update Manager version 7.3 or higher before December 20, 2020

Reason:
Cummins Inc. Update Manager 7.3 and later versions have the latest data security protocol per industry standard (TLS 1.2 & onward) that are responsible to further improve encryption of the data.

Impact:
  • If the update is not installed on time, Cummins Inc. Update Manager will stop working. For those users who missed the timely update, they will have to manually upgrade Cummins Inc. Update Manager client to version 7.3 or higher, by downloading the files from https://www.cummins.com/support/digital-products-and-services-support/cummins-update-manager-support. Manual installation of Cummins Inc. Update Manager client may require admin privileges as necessitated by the users’ PC access rights.
  • In addition, there is an increased risk of exposure to user system data. The algorithms for encryption mechanism with non-compliant security protocols does not hold strong and can enable the attacker to decrypt and collect the data from the user machine.
Recommended Action:
  • Update to Cummins Inc. Update Manager version 7.3 or higher before December 20, 2020.
  • If user continues to temporarily use Windows 7 operating system and applying this update, there is additional action required with the Registry Change (refer attachment) to become compliant with the latest data security protocol.
